In fall 2002, the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy began its curricular evaluation on the Doctor of Pharmacy professional program, which consists of three years of didactic course work and one year of experiential learning. Didactic courses were evaluated on a rolling semester basis starting with professional year one. As program evaluation continued, the paper-based evaluation data complied in binders became unmanageable. It was difficult to search content information within and between courses using static paper-based evaluation data. Also, access to the evaluation data was limited (can only be viewed by one user at a time). Evidently, we needed an on-line management information system. Market research revealed no existing on-line system met our needs, so internal solution (PharmacyCMS) was initiated.
In a broad overview, PharmacyCMS is a unified system which integrates the efforts of many in the College to meet the needs of stakeholders participating in the academic program. Its main function is to map the doctor of pharmacy program and to track student performance throughout the curriculum. By electronically mapping of the program, the curriculum will consist of an organized structure of knowledge, concepts, principles, and understandings. By tracking student performance, student workload can be assessed more accurately and their needs can be better addressed, as well. Therefore, the system aims to provide a guide to a balanced curriculum with a definite set of logical relationships.
The target outcome of implementing database management information system for professional pharmacy program evaluation is to promote continuous quality improvement of teaching and student learning throughout the doctor of pharmacy degree programby achieving the following goals:
Pharmacy Curriculum Management System (PharmacyCMS) and is designed to:
